Tiger, Tiger, Burning.....at about 450 degrees From "50 Things You Can Do To Annoy The Politically Correct." "#1: "For your next house party, make a big pot of Endangered Species Stew." And if you're looking for a butcher, I've got your man! Meet Mr. Richard Czimer of Lockport, Illinois, who shall henceforth be the Offical Butcher of the Revealed Truth Weblog. "CHICAGO -- Richard Czimer, the owner of a Lockport butcher shop at the center of an investigation into the illegal trade in the meat of endangered species, has pleaded guilty to buying and selling a leopard in August 1997. In his plea agreement Friday before U.S. District Court Judge Blanche Manning, Czimer, 56, also admitted to purchasing the carcasses of more than a dozen endangered tigers over the next year-and-a-half. Investigators said many of the animals were shot to death in cages or trailers, their skins were sold to hunters and collectors, and their flesh was sold to Czimer and other game dealers. Czimer sold some of the meat from the endangered cats at his store, Czimer's Game and Seafood, for as much as $14.95 a pound. He admitted to labeling the meat as being from lions, which are not endangered...." I raise my glass to Mr. Czimer! Particularly in light of this: "Czimer also pleaded guilty on behalf of his business to a separate count of violating federal endangered species laws. He agreed to pay $116,000 to the Save the Tiger Fund, and faces a sentence of anywhere from probation to 18 months in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for June 27." Politically Correct sentencing! They made the guy pay money to an environmentalist group. Blecch. ----- Call it the House Edge Francis Porretto, the Editor-in-Chief and Curmudgeon Emeritus of the Palace of Reason has written an outstanding essay entitled "The Capital of Gambling." In it he makes a compelling case that the frequently heard lament that "the stock market is just legalized gambling" is not only true, but a direct result of government policies. Here's part: "Dividends were the original reason to buy stock. Joint-stock corporations are supposed to pay out their net profits as dividends, after first allocating a portion for growth and disaster protection. The whole point of a share of stock was to certify that the owner had a right to a portion of those net profits. The introduction of the income tax, which first imposed double taxation of dividends, altered the equations from which people made their investment decisions. Suddenly, the return on a stock investment wasn't what it appeared to be -- and it became less so as income tax rates shot skyward. The introduction of the idea of capital gains taxes some years later made investing a still more uncertain undertaking. The calculation of capital gains has never dealt rationally with currency inflation -- a permanent specter over our economy even when the Treasury isn't spinning the printing press -- and capital gains tax rates have not been historically stable. Today, the would-be investor in equities must choose between three sets of political gambles -- currency inflation rates, capital gains tax rates and income tax rates -- and must attempt to compare them to the probabilities of stock price fluctuation and of dividend fluctuation. All of this is above and apart from the difficulty of projecting market conditions, the future cost of borrowed money, and the likelihood that unforeseen competing products will weaken or destroy a company's principal markets. Thus, the 'gambling' aspect of our investment climate arises at least as much from political considerations, as from industrial, commercial, or financial ones...." ----- As you've doubltess heard by now, the Pakistanis (with lot's of help from the FBI apparently) have caught the #3 guy in Al Queda! This is the guy who supposedly masterminded 9/11. HERE'S THE BEST PART, THOUGH. According to ABC News, he's been handed over to the U.S.! My mind is positively racing with thoughts of what we ought to do to him. Cooler heads will doubtless prevail, though. And properly so. Let's get all the information we can out of him. THEN torture him for weeks on end. Thursday, February 27, 2003
Who, exactly, is organizing these "protest" marches?A group called A.N.S.W.E.R., which is a front for the Workers World Party. I used to pick up their flyers occasionally when I went to school in downtown Chicago. They're Stalinists. Not just Marxists, but ultra-kook, totalitarian loving Stalinists. They're really almost like a religious cult. Founded by a really creepy guy named Sam Marcy. I strongly suggest that you take a look at the WWP's web site and link to some of the articles. You'll see that I'm not exaggerating about these goofs. There's a good article by Steven Schwartz on Frontpage magazine.com that gives some flavor for what these people are all about. Here's a little bit: "One of WWP’s outstanding “personalities” is a woman named Gloria LaRiva, with whom I have long personal experience. From the middle of the 1990s to the end of the decade I was secretary of the Newspaper Guild in Northern California, a union representing the employees of the San Francisco Chronicle, Examiner, and other local newspapers. I make no apologies for the militancy of the Newspaper Guild or for our role in winning the big strike of 1994. But I feel I must apologize to the people of the Bay Area for the tolerance I and others showed to LaRiva and her band of saboteurs. Comrade LaRiva dedicated herself, for many years, to the disruption of the union movement in the Bay Area. They specialized in gossip, irresponsible accusations, and other forms of manipulation. Their aim was simple: to gain power over the union workers as, a half century before, their mentors in the Communist apparatus seized and betrayed unions all over America.... The WWP, of which Comrade LaRiva is a fanatical member, represents the very lowest of the low among leftist bottom-feeders. The party has only a few dozen members. Few of them are workers. But they represent something especially filthy and vile in the Marxist-Leninist zoo: Trotskyists who became Stalinists.... WWP was founded by a miserable, obscure little man named Sam Ballan, based in Buffalo, New York. He was a long-time member of the main Trotskyist group in America – the Socialist Workers’ Party, of which James Burnham was a founder. In the mid-50s, he began to crave a party of his own. He used the political alias “Marcy,” presumably a combination of “Marx” and “Trotsky,” though his heritage more justifies it being seen as a neologism coined from “massacre” and “messy.” WWP was therefore known as “Marcyites.” Messy Marcy began by hailing the suppression of the people of Hungary by the Russians in 1956 – at a time when other leftists, including many Moscow-lining Stalinists, recoiled in horror at the bloodshed in Budapest. He went on to support the Chinese in their brutal attack on Tibet in 1959. Throughout the ‘60s there was no Communist dictatorship in the world the Marcyites would not support. They were viewed with contempt by most leftist activists during the Vietnam war period. And then came the crash of Soviet Communism. Russia had shoveled millions of dollars down the rathole of the world Communist movement, while its own citizens went without decent food and clothing. Russia had also kept Castro’s Cuba afloat and used Havana as a pipeline for more support to ragged leftist fringe groups. With the end of Communism, most of the sects with Marxist-Leninist monickers faded away. But not the WWP. They found backers. In North Korea, in Saddamite Iraq, and in the Yugoslavia of Slobodan Milosevic, Communist butcher of the Balkan Muslims...." Please do check out the article. Then remember that THESE are the people orchestrating this nonsense. ----- More Dennis Miller from the Jay Leno show Tuesday night, as reported by the Media Research Center: "The Nazi signs have got to stop. If you're in a peace march and the guy next to you has a sign saying that 'Bush is Hitler,' forget the peace thing for a second and beat his ass, because he is not Hitler.” ----- 8 - 1! Wow. This is a bit of a surprise. In a clear victory for free speech, the Supreme Court ruled 8 to 1 that racketeering laws cannot be used to punish abortion protestors. "The Court’s ruling is a victory for Operation Rescue, anti-abortion leader Joseph Scheidler and others who were ordered to pay damages to abortion clinics and were barred from interfering with their businesses for 10 years. The ruling ends that injunction. Rehnquist said their protest activity did not qualify as extortion.... The demonstrators had been sued in 1986 by abortion clinics in Delaware and Wisconsin and the National Organization for Women, which contended that racketeering and extortion laws should protect businesses from violent protests that drive away clients. They accused the groups of blocking clinic entrances, menacing doctors, patients and clinic staff, and destroying equipment during a 15-year campaign to limit abortions. The demonstrators were ordered to pay about $258,000 in damages. Rehnquist said there is no dispute that abortion protesters interfered with clinic operations and in some cases committed crimes. 'But even when their acts of interference and disruption achieved their ultimate goal of ‘shutting down’ a clinic that performed abortions, such acts did not constitute extortion,' he wrote." Apparently there still exists a flicker of the traditional liberal concern for freedom of speech. Only the Ford-appointed Fossil Judge Stevens dissented. Score one for the good guys. I Told You Not To Recycle! From "50 Things You Can Do To Annoy The Politically Correct. "#19: "Spurn recycling." Well, I was right. Confirmation comes in the form of this article from the National Anxiety Center entitled "The Utter Waste of Recycling." Here's a sample: "In 1998, it cost Americans $36 billion to get rid of 210 million tons of municipal waste. It probably costs more today. Part of that multi-billion cost is the additional element of recycling requirements. It’s not like you have a choice. New York City publishes a brochure on recycling that says bluntly 'It’s the law.' There is no question that Americans produce a lot of garbage. In the past we buried or burned it, but that was before the environmentalists, Greens, began a campaign that would have us believe there was no room left for landfills, that landfills were inherently a 'hazard', and that incinerators were no better because of what came out of the smokestack. All of a sudden, it became very costly to get rid of the garbage where, before, it was no big deal. The result of the Green lies about garbage was the closing of thousands of landfills around the nation and the increased difficulty of opening new ones. One effort in New Jersey to build a new incinerator ended up a financial nightmare for investors when the courts ruled that haulers could not be compelled by law to bring the garbage to the incinerator, especially if it was cheaper to dump it somewhere else. The problem is not that we have more garbage. The problem is we have fewer places to bury and burn it. For that you can thank the Greens. This is something to think about every time you separate your glass and plastic or bundle your newspapers, You may feel you are doing something noble for the environment, but you are paying more for that privilege and the odds are the stuff is being buried and burned just the same. The market for anything recycled often proves unprofitable because the cost of recycling does not justify itself." ----- A local (Chicago) grocery store chain is boycotting French goods. This kind of thing is picking up steam nation-wide, somewhat to my surprise. "Angry with France's opposition of President Bush (news - web sites)'s efforts to fight terrorism in Iraq, Garden Fresh Market stores in Mundelein, Wheeling and Chicago are pulling French-manufactured products from their shelves. More than a dozen items - including Evian water, Marquis de Dijon mustard and Cantalou chocolate - are getting the ax. The chain also is encouraging its suppliers to stop importing items from France." ----- How's this for Reuters' spin? Here's the headline: "Blair Suffers Major Party Revolt Over Iraq" Here's the story. The bottom line is that Blair introduced a motion in parliament to back United Nations efforts to disarm Iraq. It passed. 393 to 199. ----- Top Ten Surprises In Dan Rather's Interview with Saddam Hussein (David Letterman Show) 10. Saddam's responses to American charges were mainly of the "your momma's so fat" variety 9. The good laugh they shared at how wimpy the French are 8. Saddam kept calling Dan "Wolf" 7. The palpable sexual tension 6. Not only do they get CBS in Iraq, Saddam loves "Becker" 5. If the United States invades, Saddam would like us to do it in March, after the Baghdad tulip show 4. Entire interview was Saddam demonstrating a low-impact aerobic workout 3. Saddam fell for it every time Dan yelled, "Incoming!" 2. Proudly introduced Dan to the three relatives he hasn't executed 1. Saddam agreed to disarm if they give him one shot on "American Idol" Monday, February 24, 2003
A Man After My Own Heart This is great. From I Am Always Right "Send every citizen of every country who hates us a color T.V. and a satellite dish. Make them watch ESPN2 for 5 minutes. We build Monster Trucks for fun. We build Top Fuel Dragsters because we're bored. Piss us off and see what we'll build." ----- It's going to be a tough, tough battle, but score one for the pro-Estrada forces. Florida Senator Ben Nelson has said he will NOT support the Democrat filibuster. The Dems now have just 44 on record as supporting the filibuster. If it comes to filibuster, this will be the first time in U.S. history that an Appellate Court judgeship will have been filibustered. According to the article, the GOP is ready to force the Democrats to launch a full-fledged filibuster of the type you see in the movies: where they talk and talk and can't yield the floor. This is going to be trench warfare, but Bush must fight this one to the death. Leftists are bullies and bullies can't be mollified. They must be fought or they only get worse. ----- By now you've heard that Saddam has challenged Bush to a live debate. It was Dan Rather (who else?) who gave Saddam his forum. What you might NOT have heard, however, is that Bush issued this counterproposal. (Story broken by Scrappleface.) ----- Right Thinking makes an interesting point. In light of all the prattling about Bush trying to "stifle dissent," he challenged leftists to come up with examples of such oppression. He received two: Bill Maher losing his TV show and Laura Bush refusing to meet with a bunch of leftist poets. Run for the hills! Clearly we're a step away from the gulags. Sunday, February 23, 2003
I'm Just a Little Bit Jealous For those of you who don't closely follow the goings-on in blogland, there's been somewhat of a stir created by a person who calls herself Jane Galt, who runs a blog entitled Asymetrcial Information. I'm not sure of all the details, but apparently Ms. Galt was somewhat distressed by a batch of hatemail she received and decided to quit blogging. It looks to me like there are current postings on her site, though, so I think her hiatus was a brief one. At any rate, what really bothers me is this: I've been doing this for half a year now and haven't received a single piece of hate mail! All I get are nice emails...and I think I deserve better. So please, I know there must be SOME lefties tuning in. My hits are up quite a bit in the past few weeks, and I know you can't all be fellow travelers. Where's the hate? Chirac is NOT a Weasel says the UK's Sun Newspaper Nope. They beg to differ. The Sun says, rather, that Chirac is a worm. Perhaps even more despicable than Chirac's limp-wristed approach to the Iraq matter and his contemptuous treatment of the Vilnius 11 is the fact that Chirac invited to Paris, and met with, despicable Zimbabwean ruler Robert Mugabe. No wonder he doesn't want us to topple Saddam. Chirac obviously has a fondness for murderous tyrants. (Sun story found via Daimnation!) ----- Thomas Sowell has written an insightful article about the left's attempt to build a leftwing radio network, which I also discussed here a couple of days ago. Here are a few paragraphs: "The liberal vision of Rush Limbaugh is that he is some guy who appeals to ignorant rednecks and Joe Sixpacks. As with so many things that liberals believe, they feel no need to test their notions against reality. Actual research on Rush Limbaugh's audience has shown that they are above average in both education and income. Anyone who actually listens to Rush's show knows that those listeners who phone in are usually pretty savvy folks, and clearly a cut above those who phone in on other radio or television programs. But many liberals have such a sense of superiority that it would never occur to them to listen and learn. Some years ago, the New York Times' Anthony Lewis denounced Rush Limbaugh in one of his columns -- and then admitted, days later, that he had never listened to him. Who needs facts when you are one of the anointed?" Sowell goes on to point out that the essential problem with liberal talk radio is that talk radio is about ideas - and the American public fundamentally rejects the ideas of the left. To the extent that it achieves electoral success, the left does so by demonizing its conservative opposition and fostering envy and resentment. That doesn't play well on radio, though. In addition, as Sowell points out, the last avowedly left person to win a presidential election was Lyndon Johnson 35 years ago. Sowell concludes: "If they can promote paranoia and resentment among blacks by crying "racism" at every turn, they have the inside track. And if they can keep black voters' attention focused on symbolic issues like confederate flags -- instead of how their children are trapped in failing schools, for the greater glory of the teachers' unions -- then the Democrats can continue to get nine out of 10 black votes. While fomenting fear and envy may gain votes, it isn't enough for talk radio, which is ultimately about ideas. Liberal talk show hosts don't have any goodies to hand out, the way liberal politicians do. Al Franken is the perfect man to try. He has written a book titled "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot." Competition is the way to find out who is the idiot. I would offer to bet but I would just be taking your money." ----- Then there's some guy named Neal Pollack, who wants all the pro AND anti-war writers to "just shut up". Here are a couple of tidbits from this fairly amusing piece on something called TheStranger.com (found via Reason Online): "My annoyance has been stewing for a while. It peaked with the emergence of Poets Against the War, an overhyped coalition of usual suspects led by Seattle poet and small-press publisher Sam Hamill. Last week Mr. Hamill, with a maximum amount of self-righteous pomposity, staged readings across the country. My first reaction, upon hearing about the protest readings, was, "Oh, no. The poets are against the war. Whatever are we going to do?" But my flip, quote-marks-in-the-air reaction grew even less sincere and more ironic when I actually read some of the poetry. Select pieces are available on the Internet, in the e-book 100 Poets Against the War, now in a "third edition" because there have been so many submissions. Why, if you didn't know better, you'd almost think that thousands of poets were taking advantage of a political crisis to further their careers!" "You'd expect a lot of the antiwar poetry to share Lamott's dippy, blunted-edge Marin County attitude. But the poetry is actually quite harsh and political, and so much more annoying because of that. I'm just sick of the whole brouhaha. I hate the self-righteous grandstanding of the poets, and I hate the accusations of anti-Americanism and "bad manners" from their opponents in the weekly magazines. The whole "controversy" seems prefabricated, cut from the cloth of a cultural war that affects no one and doesn't need to be fought. Why bother taking either side? It's bad poetry! So shut up!..." And this: "(J)ust for laughs, let's listen to a few more antiwar poetry bleatings. Here's E Russell Smith, who is apparently a third grader, with an important dissent: 'This is the land/where the war was fought/that George fought./This is the oil/that comes from the land/where the war was fought/that George fought.' Or how about the great poet Stephen Vincent: 'No Blood for Oil/Did Your Car Start This Walk?/How Many Lives Per Gallon?/Go Solar Not Ballistic/Start Drafting SUV Drivers Now.' "There are, according to Sam Hamill's reliable count, more than 5,000 specimens of this antiwar doggerel creeping around, degrading the English language. For a far more nuanced and sophisticated anti-poetry screed, I point you toward the February 17 issue of the Weekly Standard, and J. Bottum's vicious unloading, 'The Poets vs. The First Lady.' Like all articles in the Standard, the piece is the usual stew of gratuitous redbaiting and '60s-bashing, those twin beasts without which the conservative press would cease to exist. But it also contains a phrase that to me explains the current onslaught of lousy protest poetry, now and forever: 'There's something in the air at this moment--some scent of a long-vanished dawn among the old, some hunger for a heaven they never knew among the young.' "Yes! Poets! Put a sock in your collective mouth! Now!" |
