This happened in America? "Susette Kelo dreamed of owning a home that looked out over the water. She purchased and lovingly restored her little pink house where the Thames River meets the Long Island Sound in 1997, and has enjoyed the great view from its windows ever since. The Dery family, down the street from Susette, has lived in Fort Trumbull since 1895; Matt Dery and his family live next door to his mother and father, whose parents purchased their house when William McKinley was president.... Tragically, the City of New London is turning that dream into a nightmare. In 1998, pharmaceutical giant Pfizer built a plant next to Fort Trumbull and the City determined that someone else could make better use of the land than the Fort Trumbull residents. The City handed over its power of eminent domain—the ability to take private property for public use—to the New London Development Corporation (NLDC), a private body, to take the entire neighborhood for private development. Amazing. The case was argued this week before the U.S. Supreme Court. If the plaintiff loses, the principle that the government can take property for no other reason than someone else can make it more valuable will be firmly estblished. Scary stuff. The case is being handled by one of the true good guys: The Institute for Justice. This is a rare occasion where an organization with the word "Justice" in its title really IS concerned with justice. Read the article about this case, with other links, here. Thursday, February 24, 2005
More Ward Churchill Idiocy Michelle Malkin has transcripts of Churchill speaking before a group in Seattle in 2003. During the course of his speech, the nutjob essentially advised his audience how to commit terrorist attacks. Here's the first of 4 transcripts Malkin has on her site: Question from audience: You mentioned a little bit ago, "Why did it take a bunch of Arabs to do what you all should have done a long time ago," that's my question. Malkin also has links to the original audiotapes. ----- But tenured Indian impersonators don't have a monopoly on insane hatemongering. Listen to this quote from a documentary that appeared on an Iranian satellite TV channel in - where else? - France: "There is a white ship sailing the oceans. It doesn't enter the territorial waters of Iran or similar countries. Our Arab brothers must look out for this ship. In it [the Zionists] hold children only one or two years old, who don't know anything. These are children no one cared for. They are kidnapped by various means under the pretext of wanting to take care of them. These children are held on this ship, and no one knows their fate. They become teenagers, not knowing what their fate will be. They receive the best medical care and are under constant physical monitoring and supervision. Why do [the Zionists] give them such care? To use them for medical purposes. They use the heart, the kidneys, and their other organs." ----- And on the nonpolitical front, Kim DuToit has posted a delightful little essay on drinking and the workplace and the differences in European and American attitudes in that regard. Having worked with lots of Brits over the years, I can particularly relate to his disdain for American Puritanism in this regard. Alas, as he more or less concludes, it is pretty much the fault of the lawyers. As are most things these days, it seems. Wednesday, February 23, 2005
The wrong sort of Black This story almost defies belief. If I understand the article correctly, the usual crop of superannuated "black leaders" are unhappy that a disproportionately high percentage of blacks admitted to major universities are from Africa or the Caribbean. If you think about it, this is just an extension of the treatment this same bunch of race-hustlers gives to black conservatives. First this crowd was able to declare people like Thomas Sowell, J.C. Watts, and Clarence Thomas non-people. It was bad enough that they were able to brand black conservatives as "inauthentic" blacks because they dared to leave the Kennedy/Jackson Plantation. Now, in a true left-wing version of the Cautionary Tale, they're coming for the immigrants! "Nathan Hare, who fought to establish the first ethnic studies program in the United States at San Francisco State University in 1968 and is co-founder of the Black Think Tank in San Francisco, blames these numbers on old stereotypes. Are you taking this in? Mr. Hare finds it objectionable that immigrants are getting ahead BECAUSE THEY'RE WILLING TO TAKE LOW-LEVEL JOBS! As if this were positively unheard of in the American experience - that immigrants should be willing to start at the bottom to build a life for themselves. The Irish, Italians, Poles....they all came here as Fortune 500 accountants, don't you know! The fear of such as Mr. Hare, of course, is that the progress of African and Caribbean immigrants threatens to discredit the victimist ideology upon which the entire race-hustling empire rests. I mean, if Nigerians are succeeding where American blacks are not, what does that say about the nonsensical notion that "institutional racism" is still a powerful weapon The Man uses to keep blacks down? Nonetheless: did you ever dream you would hear people utter this sort of drivel and expect to be taken seriously? The article continues: "Since 1990, according to immigration figures reported in the New York Times, more African immigrants have arrived in the United States voluntarily than the total who came as slaves before international slave trafficking was outlawed in 1807. More have been coming here annually -- about 50,000 legal immigrants -- than in any of the peak years of the Middle Passage across the Atlantic, and more have migrated here from Africa since 1990 than in nearly the entire preceding two centuries, according to the report." Islamic terrorists may not bother them so much. But all those immigrants, almost none of whom think they owe the likes of Jesse Jackson a damned thing? To the Poverty Pimp fraternity, THAT constitutes a Clear and Present Danger! Tuesday, February 22, 2005
How come this is the first I've heard of this? Found via Ravenswood. "You think the Republican National Committee could get this many people of color in a single room? Only if they had the hotel staff in here." -- Incoming DNC Chairman, Howard Dean. Ravenswood's blog was the first place I had seen this. Can you IMAGINE if, oh, the chairman of the Republican National Committee said this? Do you think it would be leading the news every day? Do you think the New York Times would be running three stories about it every day, day after day? The double-standard reeks to high heaven. On the other hand, it's fun to see that Howard Dean won't disappoint in the wackiness department. ----- I discovered a very funny site via that same Ravenswood link called "News Jerks". Here's a funny segment on a piece discussing the by now infamous David Wead tapes of President Bush. The article is called: "The Bastard Set Me Up." "New York Times pointed out that President Bush criticized Al Gore for using weed during the 2000 Presidential Elections. But President Bush may have only been pointing out how marijuana can impair a person’s thinking and judgment and, possibly, slow a person's speech and make them seem dull and have them take credit for things they didn't actually invent." And here's some more from an article entitled "Stay Away From the Grassy Knoll, George." It's about that guy who was arrested for planning to assassinate W. "An American citizen with a ridiculous name has been arrested and charged with attempted terrorist acts, including a plot to assassinate President George W. Bush.... Monday, February 21, 2005
This blog is too politically correct In an effort to remedy this deficiency, I hereby present this article by a population biologist named Gregory Cochran. His article deals with the potential causes of homosexuality. And his conclusion? Homosexuality is very likely a disease caused by a virus. A very pronounced tip of the hat for this one goes to the blogosphere's most indefatigable practitioner, John Ray, without whom I wouldn't have come across this article in.... well, ever. I think Ray is probably spot-on when he says of Mr. Cochran: "If ever his theories become widely known, I think his life will be in danger. At the least there would be attempts to lock him up for 'hate speech'." As for Cochran's piece, it's quite a bit to take in for a nonscientist, but I think Ray summarizes the basic point quite nicely as well: "Basically, he says that if genes and upbringing don't make you homosexual, viruses probably do." Here's a lengthier sample, though. For those of you with a scientific background, do check out the article and give me your thoughts: "How could a serious disease be common, if evolution is always optimizing everything? Well, if it hit you at age 85, selection wouldn't be very good at filtering it away. People have already had their children by then ... So this optimizing process works less well at advanced ages. Which is the basic explanation for aging. Sunday, February 20, 2005
You might be a CINO We've all heard of RINOS: Republicans In Name Only. Arlen Spector, Olympia Snowe, the execrable Lincoln Chaffee. Members of that species. But the more I listen to alleged "conservatives," whatever their party affiliation, I think it's much more important to be on the lookout for CINO's: Conservatives In Name Only. I'm coming across them more and more on the net and especially on talk radio - and they're annoying as hell. They start a lot of their sentences with "I consider myself a conservative but..." For the most part they haven't a clue as to what modern conservatism really is and aren't conservative at all; but they like the attention they get by calling themselves "conservative" and advocating distinctly unconservative positions. With that in mind, I've developed this list of Fifteen Signs You (or someone you're talking politics with) Might Be A CINO. They're presented in no particular order. Take the test and score yourself. I've even come up with a rating system, which follows the test. 15 Signs You Might Be A CINO 1) You think we need a "comprehensive energy plan," but oppose nuclear power, expanded oil drilling, and expanded coal production. That is; your comprehensive plan consists of tilting at windmills and wearing sweaters in the dark. 2) You believe we need more "Campaign Finance Reform" to fix the problems created by the last several rounds of campaign finance reform. 3) You believe that global warming is a clear and present danger and that environmentalists, even when they are clearly mistaken, have pure motives. 4) You have ever fretted over "fully funding" Head Start. 5) You believe there is such a thing as "homophobia," and that it is something against which we need to be constantly vigilant. 6) You are "pro-choice," except for when it comes to schools, guns, Social Security, commerce, or just about anything else except abortion. 7) You think the National Education Association is a harmless teachers union. 8) You admire John McCain for any reason other than his military service. 9) You loathe Ann Coulter. 10) You honestly fear the "religious right." 11) You have ever uttered the phrase "tax cuts for the rich" in any context other than to deride leftist economic illiteracy. 12) You are scandalized by the notion of eliminating either the Department of Education or the Department of Energy. 13) You believe that "reaching out to Democrats" is a strategy that is either advisable or likely to bear fruit for the Republican Party. 14) You unquestioningly accept the notion that Islam is a Religion of Peace. 15) You have faith in the United Nations. Even a drop. SCORING: 0 - Right-Thinking, Right-Wing, Right-Blooded American 1 or 2 - With proper reeducation, you can achieve full membership in the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy 3 through 5 - Borderline CINO. Treatment: Avoid all contact with CNN. Ingest large doses of Fox News. Read an Ann Coulter book. Test again after completion of treatment regimen. 6 through 14 - You are a full-blown CINO. Turn in your VRWC membership card (IF you ever had one!), stop calling yourself a conservative, and join the Democratic Underground where you can be with your own kind. 15 - You are John McCain. |
