Item #1 The State of California is in a tizzy over the fact that frustrated parents have increasingly taken to educating their children in facilities not administered, controlled, or staffed by the NEA and its denizens; specifically, in their own homes. So they're taking action. State Deputy Superintendent Joanne Mendoza has written a memo indicating that unless these parents have proper "teaching credentials," they will not be allowed to certify as home-schoolers - thereby making the students truants (and their parents criminals) in the eyes of the State of California. Item #2 The Chicago Transit Authority is experiencing fewer riders and, consequently, declining revenues. They blame the economy, but anyone who's ever ridden a CTA bus can tell you there's probably more at work. Anyway, guess what idea the geniuses at the CTA have come up with to raise revenue? You guessed it. They're talking about raising fares. So, when the state of California can't educate kids properly, it makes criminals out of parents who try to do so themselves. And when the "CTA Experience" isn't sufficiently appealing to attract the level of patronage required to fund the agency's operations, it responds by raising prices on those poor, brave souls still riding the busses. Somewhere, Milton Friedman is chuckling. |
